How does Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) work?

Comparison of Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) with other therapeutic approaches

SE™ does not require verbalizing trauma, thereby avoiding its re-experiencing. The method operates at a physiological level, addressing the traumatic activation stored in the body. Often, clients have undergone other forms of therapy but still experience symptoms, whether physical, emotional, or relational. In some cases, individuals suffer from symptoms without knowing their underlying cause.

Dr. Peter Levine discovered that by working with the body and guiding the release of accumulated energy, the nervous system’s homeostasis can be restored, leading to a resolution of symptoms regardless of the trauma’s severity.

SE™ works in the present moment, focusing on bodily awareness, somatic memory, and available resources. It tracks bodily sensations, allowing highly charged survival energies to be safely processed and gradually released. This process facilitates the completion of the trauma cycle and supports nervous system self-regulation. Sensations such as warmth, trembling, expansion and contraction, relaxation, and tension emerge throughout this process. Rather than reliving trauma, individuals renegotiate and heal it.

Key principles

Stabilization – Clients must be in a safe and stable state before engaging with traumatic material. A relatively secure environment is essential for the healing process.
Titration – Borrowed from chemistry, this term refers to working in small, gradual steps that support recovery without triggering overwhelming emotional or physical reactions.

Pendulation – Clients learn to recognize and expand their internal, external, and missing resources. As activation increases, they shift between states of arousal and stability, preventing overwhelm.

Integration – As clients develop greater tolerance for bodily sensations, they begin to trust their body’s innate wisdom, gradually releasing the fear and terror associated with the traumatic event. This enhances their capacity for self-regulation.

SE™ works peripherally with activation. The process starts away from the area of greatest discomfort or the traumatic event itself, gradually approaching it by exploring what happened before and after. This helps reduce accumulated energy and increase stability, making it easier to process intense sensations and emotions.

Regardless of the trauma’s origin (adverse prenatal or birth experiences, disorganized early attachment, episodic or chronic trauma, prolonged stress), safe and gradual renegotiation through SE™ helps individuals reconnect with their innate capacity for healing. Over time, they begin to feel more alive, healthier, and stronger in the present moment. These changes lead to different responses to stress, both consciously and unconsciously.
