“Trauma is a fact of life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence. Not only can trauma be healed, but with appropriate guidance and support, it can be transformative.”

“Being able to feel safe with other people is probably the single most important aspect of mental health; safe connections are fundamental to meaningful and satisfying lives.”

Bessel A. van der Kolk

“The essence of trauma is disconnection from the self.”

Gabor Maté

“The state of our nervous system forms the foundation of our experience of the world – understanding and regulating it is the key to healing.”

Stephen Porges

“Trauma is the hidden architect of our societies. When we understand and integrate it, we can unlock incredible human potential.”

Thomas Hübl

“The spontaneous movement in all of us is toward connection, health, and aliveness. No matter how withdrawn and isolated we have become, or how serious the trauma we have experienced, on the deepest level, just as a plant spontaneously moves toward sunlight, there is in each of us an impulse moving toward connection and healing.”

Laurence Heller

“Trauma is a fact of life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence. Not only can trauma be healed, but with appropriate guidance and support, it can be transformative.”

Core ideas and principles of Somatic Experiencing® (SE™)

How does Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) work?

Comparison of Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) with other therapeutic approaches

SE™ (Somatic Experiencing) is an innovative method aimed at alleviating the physical, psychological, and emotional effects of acute and chronic stress, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is an early-intervention approach developed by Dr. Peter Levine that provides support soon after a traumatic event to help regulate the nervous system, prevent long-term distress, and promote resilience.

The method is based on the observation that animals in the wild, despite being regularly exposed to threats, rarely experience trauma. They use innate mechanisms to regulate and release the high levels of energy associated with survival instincts. These mechanisms provide animals with an “immunity” to trauma, allowing them to return to normal functioning after stressful experiences.

Humans are also born with similar regulatory mechanisms, but they are often suppressed by the rational part of the brain. This inhibits the complete release of survival energy and prevents the nervous system from restoring its balance. As a result, the unprocessed energy remains “trapped” in the body and nervous system, leading to various trauma-related symptoms.

SE™ helps individuals tune into bodily sensations to ‘renegotiate’ and heal their trauma, rather than reliving it. By tapping into their natural instincts, people can access their innate ability to release trauma, allowing them to gradually and safely discharge the accumulated energy. When this energy is released, symptoms often decrease significantly or even disappear entirely.

Traumatic events often confront individuals with the threat of death, triggering intense responses. The healing process can strengthen one’s sense of self and deepen connections with others. It often feels like uncovering hidden inner resources and newfound resilience. With these new strengths, individuals can reengage with the world, experiencing greater flow and vitality, sometimes even a profound spiritual awakening.
